about
Pump picked-up the Boney shanty from club singer and co-founder Curly Del’Monte at Auckland’s Poles Apart Folk Club in 1972. Curly also gave Pump ‘Down the Road’ and ‘Sweeny Todd the Barber’, delivered in Curly’s never to be forgotten ‘music hall’ style. Boney is the story of Bonaparte’s rise and fall, and his follow-up rise and collapse. The song appeared on broadsides following Waterloo, and was adopted by sailors of the day in the form of a work shanty.
